SKIN 101 – How to build a skincare routine for all skin types

how to build a skincare routine

If you want good skin, you need a skincare routine. Chances are, if you’re oily or combination, it’s the difference between breakouts and clean skin. Your diet, exercise and genes play a part in your skin’s condition, but good skincare does make a difference too. I didn’t win at the gene lottery (actually, I still have hormonal acne), so my skincare routine together with a healthy lifestyle are crucial to me.  My skin doesn’t feel oily or dry and my hormonal acne stays manageable with my routine.

Skincare is more than just washing your face and slapping some lotion on. To me it’s self care, pampering myself and feeling good in my own skin.

I created a skincare routine that works for all the different skin types: Normal, Dry, Combination and Oily.

Basic skincare routine for all skin types

Here is a basic skincare routine for all skin types, with different product options depending on your skin.

If you have oily skin, you can check out the best moisturizers for oily skin here. And if you have dry skin, check out this dry skin post for even more product recommendations.

simple skincare routine

Here is what your skincare routine should look like in the evening. If I were to simplify it even more, it would consist of double cleansing, toner and lotion. But if there’s any problem with your skin, I really recommend using a serum. You’ll also benefit from using an oil. Argan oil actually works for battling different skin problems too.

Evening skincare routine steps & product recommendations

  1. Makeup remover

    Makeup eraser  all skintypes
  2. Cleanser

how to create a skincare routine

Morning routine is slightly simpler. I like to splash my face with cold water before cleaning my face with a toner. Then I just apply my serums and lotions. I use a lighter cream in the morning, so that it works under makeup too.

how to take care of your skin skincare routine

Basic skincare routine – a few notes

Double Cleansing: Makeup remover & Cleanser

You should always take off your makeup with a makeup remover. I recommend an oil based makeup remover, because it’s gentle but effective in soaking the makeup off. Another good option is makeup eraser, which is a soft microfiber towel. That also removes makeup well and is machine washable.

After you’ve taken off the makeup you need to wash your face to get rid of sweat, excess sebum and dead skin cells.

A toner

Many people skip toner thinking it’s not important. Guess what – it is! A toner helps to maintain the right ph-balance on your skin and bring some very much needed hydration to the skin. I like acid containing toners in the evening, because they help to brighten up the complexion and keep blackheads at bay. In the morning I like to switch to a hydrating toner.

The importance of serums

A hydrating serum works wonders and suits all skin types. It absorbs deeper into your skin and keeps your skin hydrated and radiant. My favorite hydrating serums contain hyaluronic acid, which helps to absorb water to your skin. I use a hydrating serum in the morning before my lotion.

If there’s any problem with impurities or texture in the skin, I would choose another serum for the night. AHA or BHA containing serums are awesome for oily or combination skin and acne. They really improve the skin’s texture by gently exfoliating the skin with acids. You can use serum as a treatment when needed. TBS Drops of Youth Serum is great when my skin is acting up. Recently I’ve been using Evolve Beauty’s Liquid Radiance Glycolic Toner, which is very effective as well. The morning after I’ve applied it my skin feels very smooth and my redness/impurities have calmed down. It’s a toner, but I would use it as a serum, since it’s a bit too effective for constant use.

Oil

Natural oils are amazing when it comes to moisturizing and treating the skin. Argan oil is non comedogenic and it works for all skin types – even acne. I always mix oil to my lotion and then apply it all over my face and neck. I use oil only in the evening, so that it really has time to work its magic during the night.

Lotion/Cream

To lock all the moisture in, you apply a moisturizer. You can get away with just one, especially if you’re using argan oil (which you can mix in with your moisturizer for the night). But you can also choose a lighter one for day and a creamier one for the night. Most of the time I use two different lotions, but it’s not a necessity.

Don’t forget your eye cream! It should be a different product made for the sensitive eye area. The one I linked is awesome, because it suits irritated eyelids and soothes the skin.

how to build a skincare routine

Radiant skin comes from masking

I really feel like the secret to a radiant happy skin is a weekly mask. Exfoliating masks are the most effective, because they get rid of dead skin cells. Exfoliating makes the other products absorb to the skin better (so it benefits even dry skin). Better yet, your skin feels softer and looks glowy. This step is done only once per week so take it as your personal spa moment – enjoy it!

My absolute favorite masks are from Evolve Beauty and they both work in just 5 minutes. *Radiant Glow mask is a safe bet for everyone and a great option also before a big day (I also recommend it for brides!). It smells like vanilla and exfoliates the skin gently using coconut shell powder.

*Miracle Mask is an awesome even more effective one, that is your salon-like treatment at home. It looks like mango jelly, but is packed with fruit acids that make your skin baby smooth. It doesn’t have those ‘grains’ so I would choose this for dry skin.

BEST SKINCARE PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR

best skincare products of the year 2018

This year I most definitely wanted to choose my ultimate favorite products of the year AKA the best beauty products of the year. I chose two categories (so that I could include more products, I know, I’m wise): skincare and makeup.

Today I will share with you my favorite skincare & body products of the year 2018. These products I used the most and I feel like they are amazing and they deserve this special title. You may have seen some of these on my other posts, but there are also some products I haven’t yet talked about. I only chose nine items, because I wanted to keep this listing short – and – well, special. Obviously there were other great products I used as well.

BEST SKINCARE PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR 2018

best skincare products of the year

When I chose my products I noticed a funny thing: there were three brands I loved the most. Rituals, Evolve Beauty and Lavera. Oh – and most of my favorites are from organic brands! Lavera, Evolve Beauty and Hurraw! are all natural beauty brands.

best evolve beauty products

Cotton fresh deodorant cream*
Last year I found a deodorant that works and I was happy to find it from an organic brand. This deodorant has my back and I really appreciate it. Natural deodorants can be effective as well, guys!
Read my blog post on it here.

Evolve Beauty Radiant Glow mask*
I love this mask. It smells amazing, it makes my skin smooth and radiant and it’s quick to use. I mean, five minutes is more than enough to work it’s magic. One of those can’t live without products. I would recommend it to all skintypes, but if your skin is very dry or sensitive, let it sit on your skin for a shorter time.
Read my blog post on it here.

lavera best skincare products

Lavera Hydro-Effect Cleansing Balm*
After years of searching for the perfect cleanser that would be gentle yet effective, I think I’ve found the one. This finishes my cleansing ritual (after taking my makeup off with another product) and overall I think it’s a great product for normal to oily skintypes.
Read my blog post on it here.

Lavera Mattifying Balancing Cream*
Sometimes having a sister with oily skin comes in handy. As in, she finds the perfect moisturizer before you and loops you in. This mattifying cream is great for my skin especially during summer. It’s somehow quite thick and moisturizing, even though it does leave a matte finish and is lightweight for oilier skintypes.

rituals happy buddha shower foam ritual of dao body mist

Rituals Ritual of Happy Buddha foaming shower gel*
I’ve been obsessing over Rituals body products and especially these foaming shower gels for so long, I thought it was time to introduce some on my blog as well. I know shower products might seem boring, but if you haven’t tried Rituals’ shower gels, you haven’t lived. It’s the perfect every day luxury. Happy Buddha is one of my favorite scents along with Sakura and Dao.

Rituals The Ritual of Dao bed & body mist*
The scent of the year for me was this. It’s calming, sweet, mild and delicious all at the same time. I bought this last summer while we were in Amsterdam and been using it ever since. Especially when I’m stressed, I like to wear this. It’s funny, because usually I’m all about sweet and crazy scents. This one time I wore a perfume and Risto thought I was carrying candy with me. I think that about sums up my scent-profile. But hey, maybe I’m becoming a proper adult and appreciating things that are a little less… well, intense.

makeup eraser pink

Makeup eraser*
I only got this at the end of the year, but I know it’s here to stay. If you’ve been searching for the best and easiest way to remove your makeup, look no further. This solves all your problems. I mean, it removes all your makeup. Quick and easy. Honestly. I might just do a blog post about it. The post will be called “An angel’s touch on your skin”. Or not. You get the idea.

skin treat warming body scrub

Skin Treat Healthy Radiance Warming Body Scrub
I love being warm and this warming body scrub makes me feel warm even after showering. Living in a cold country I’ll use all the tricks to stay warm. Oh, and this also makes my skin nice and smooth. Again, body products can be boring and I know that taking care of all your skin is a struggle (or is it just me?). This makes the task just a little bit easier and nicer. And your body cream absorbs nicely after using this. Taking care of the skin of your body is just as important as taking care of your face.

hurraw! moon balm best lip balm

Hurraw! moon balm*
This just had to be included in the list. I’ve been using Hurraw!’s lip balms for years now and this is my secret weapon in fighting dry lips. It’s very nourishing, smells good and is just perfect to use during nights.

the best skincare products of the year

And that’s it! There was one product I didn’t choose for this list, just because I’ve been mentioning it quite a lot in my blog already. But I wanted to quickly give it one more shoutout, just because, well, it’s the best. And that is The drops of youth serum from The Body Shop. It just stays in my favorites year after year. It’s the key product in keeping my pores clean, my skin smooth and helping diminishing my acne scars.

And as I said, there were so many great skincare products I loved this year. If you would like to read more about them, check out my Skincare category for more reviews.
